ASCII Band
Backgrounds
An animated ASCII background where glowing characters form a flowing digital landscape, with dark dome-like waves rising through vibrant purple and magenta light.
ASCII Dome transforms a dense field of characters into a continuously shifting visual landscape. Letters, numbers, and symbols form a luminous pattern that transitions from bright white and pink to deep violet, creating the appearance of a textured digital surface.
Dark, dome-shaped formations rise and move beneath the character field, producing flowing waves and curved silhouettes. As the patterns shift, the contrast between glowing symbols and dark negative space creates an illusion of depth.
Combining retro ASCII aesthetics with fluid, contemporary motion, ASCII Dome brings a distinctive computational character to creative portfolios, technology websites, and experimental digital experiences.
import AsciiDome from '@/components/effects/ascii-dome' const page = () => { return ( <div className="h-screen w-full"> <AsciiDome /> </div> )} export default pageConsider an experimental design studio building a portfolio around generative art and digital technology. The homepage features a bold headline over ASCII Dome, where thousands of characters form luminous patterns that shift around dark, rolling shapes.
The moving character field introduces texture and depth while preserving a futuristic visual identity. Its contrast between structured typography and organic movement reinforces the studio's experimental approach.
The result is an immersive hero section that communicates creativity and technical sophistication without relying on conventional imagery.
ASCII Dome is less suitable for content-heavy dashboards, administrative interfaces, and websites where visual simplicity is essential. Its dense character patterns and continuous movement can compete with foreground text.
Avoid combining it with several other typography-based animations or complex backgrounds. The effect works best as a central visual element with restrained content and generous spacing.
Keep character rendering and animation updates efficient, particularly at higher resolutions. Dense symbol patterns can increase rendering work, so adjust character density, visual detail, and update frequency according to device capabilities.
On mobile and lower-powered devices, simplify the effect where necessary. Pause decorative animation when offscreen and provide a static alternative for reduced-motion preferences.
Maintain sufficient contrast between foreground content and the changing ASCII patterns. Keep headings, navigation, and interactive controls independent of the decorative background so its characters do not interfere with meaningful page content or assistive technology.
On mobile, adapt character density and dome proportions to preserve the visual effect without overwhelming smaller screens. Respect prefers-reduced-motion by pausing the animation or displaying a static frame.
| Prop | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
backgroundColor | color | #000000 | Canvas colour behind the light. |
hue | number | 0 | Turns every colour around the colour wheel, in degrees. 0 is the reference red-to-violet. |
saturation | number | 1 | Colour strength. 0 is greyscale, 1 matches the reference. |
intensity | number | 1 | Overall brightness. 1 matches the reference. |
softness | number | 1 | How diffuse the light is. Above 1 softens the steps between colours. |
grain | number | 0.03 | Film grain strength. 0 turns it off. |
characters | string | =+xX80S#@ | Characters from darkest to brightest. The first is usually a space. |
cellSize | number | 16 | Width of one character cell, in px. |
glyphOpacity | number | 1 | Strength of the character layer. 0 hides it. |
gaps | number | 0.22 | Share of cells left empty, 0 to 1. |
flicker | number | 1.5 | How often each character re-rolls, per second. 0 freezes the grid. |
speed | number | 1 | How fast the dome drifts. 0 holds it still. |
flow | number | 1 | How far the dome breathes and ripples while it drifts. |
interactive | boolean | true | Let the pointer stir the light like ink in water. |
smearStrength | number | 1 | How far a stroke drags the light. |
smearRadius | number | 0.1 | Width of the stroke, in canvas heights. |
ASCII Dome is an animated React background featuring glowing ASCII characters arranged into a shifting digital landscape, with dark dome-like formations moving through purple and magenta gradients.
A WebGL2 shader lights a broad dome that steps from dark violet through magenta to a pale glow, with the top corners warming to red. The screen is divided into character cells, and each cell picks a glyph by the brightness beneath it. The characters re-roll now and then so the grid shimmers, and the pointer smears the light like ink in water.
Yes. ASCII Dome can be integrated into React and Next.js applications using an appropriate client-side animation setup.
No Three.js. ASCII Dome is drawn with raw WebGL2 shaders on a single canvas and has no runtime dependencies beyond React. It does need WebGL2: where the browser can't provide it, nothing is drawn and only the background colour shows.
Yes. The characters prop sets the glyphs from darkest to brightest, and cellSize, glyphOpacity, gaps and flicker shape the grid. Colour is set with backgroundColor, hue, saturation, intensity and softness, motion with speed and flow, and the pointer smear with interactive, smearStrength and smearRadius.
Yes. It pauses while offscreen or in a hidden tab, caps the canvas pixel ratio, and holds a single still frame when reduced motion is preferred. Raise cellSize on small screens if the characters look too dense.
